B+HR

January 5-6, 2025, Bhedetar, Dhankuta

Building on the success of its December training in Dhulikhel, the National Business Initiative (NBI) conducted a second two-day capacity building training on Business and Human Rights (B+HR) at the Lali Basera Hotel and Lodge in Bhedetar, Dhankuta. This event brought together 31 participants: 26 from the private sector and 5 from civil society organizations (CSOs), representing a diverse cross-section of industries from Nepal's eastern region.

About the Event

The training aimed to deepen understanding of human rights in business operations and advance the implementation of Nepal's National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights (NAP). Key objectives included:
  • Introducing foundational B+HR concepts: UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs), CSR, ESG, SDGs, and responsible business conduct
  • Building practical skills in Human Rights Due Diligence (HRDD) — from risk assessment to integration, tracking, and communication
  • Equipping participants with tools for effective human rights implementation, including grievance mechanisms
  • Strengthening collaboration between businesses and CSOs to enhance human rights outcomes

The training was led by Adv. Santosh Sigdel, Executive Director of Digital Rights Nepal, with facilitation support from the NBI team. His expertise in business and human rights provided participants with both theoretical knowledge and practical strategies to address real-world challenges.

Training Highlights

Day 1 established the foundation with sessions on the evolution of B+HR norms, the three pillars of UNGPs (Protect, Respect, Remedy), and Nepal's National Action Plan. Participants engaged in hypothetical case discussions and a hands-on HRDD workshop covering supply chain management, risk assessment, and impact evaluation.
Day 2 deepened HRDD practice with sessions on integration, tracking, and communication, followed by a dedicated session on stakeholder engagement and grievance mechanisms. The training concluded with a facilitated discussion on fostering collaboration between CSOs and businesses, and a final networking session.
